TAQWA THE GOAL OF
FASTING
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O you who believe! Observing As-Saum (the fasting) is
prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may
become Al-Muttaqun (Taqwaa) Surah al-Baqarah [Q2:183]
Taqwaa is one of the greatest goals of the believer and the
ultimate reason behind fasting. Fasting prevents a person from committing what
Allah detests and this is achieved because of the person’s awareness and
alertness that, they are under Allah’s surveillance.
If the person fasting is able to prevent themselves from
what is generally permissible for them – such as food, drink and sexual
relations with their spouse, they will be in a better position to prevent
themselves from things that are generally forbidden by Allah, such as lying,
backbiting, slandering, cursing, adultery and fornication.
And beware my fellow Muslims of being deceived by some
religious films and network series (broadcasted over the TV and radio), for
they are from the footsteps of the Devil, like poison in honey.
The Prophet, SAW said, “If one of you is fasting, he should
not use obscene language nor shout nor act ignorantly. And if someone speaks
abusively to him or wants to fight with him, he should say, 'I am fasting, I am
fasting.'” [Sahih Al-Bukhari]
He SAW, also said, “Whoever does not abstain from false
speech and acting upon that (false speech), Allah is not in need of him leaving
his food and his drink.” [Sahih Al-Bukhari].
Therefore, the one who does not understand the concept of
Taqwaa and strive to achieve it will not gain anything from their fast except
hunger and thirst.
Please share with family and friends, keep smiling
May grant us the ability to be conscious of Him all the days
of our lives, direct our path towards His pleasure and grant us success in this
world and the hereafter, Aameen
